Wind energy:
Wind energy is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to the conventional energy production from fossil fuels. It is abundant and renewable and does not emit any greenhouse gas or other harmful emissions during the energy production process.
Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) are the backbone of wind energy production; these are the devices where the wind kinetic energy is transformed into renewable power. WTGs are manufactured in a wide range of shapes and sizes, but the most common design is the horizontal-axis, 3-blade configuration mounted on a horizontal axis. Their power output ranges from a few kilowatts to as big as 15 megawatts.
A group of wind turbines is called a wind farm (WF). The WFs can be located either on land in open landscapes, hills or high mountains (onshore WFs) or at the sea (offshore WFs).
wind energy statistics
Wind energy brings significant benefits to local communities.
Apart from being clean and cost-competitive, wind energy brings significant benefits to local communities since it is associated with strong growth and employment where the projects are implemented.
Wind energy employed 300,000 people in Europe in 2019 and contributes €37bn to the EU GDP.
Each GW of onshore wind Europe is estimated to support around 5,000 jobs in planning, manufacturing and installation while the ongoing operation and maintenance of wind farms supports local jobs, too.
The corresponding numbers for offshore wind farms cane be even higher, especially within their operational phase.
